Different visa categories require different language levels. This guide breaks down exactly what you need for each type of German visa application.

Family Reunification Visa

Requires A1 certificate (basic level). This is the minimum language requirement and proves you can handle basic everyday situations in German.

Student Visa

Requirements vary by program. German-taught programs typically require B2–C1 certified proficiency. English-taught programs may not require German certification but B1+ is strongly recommended for daily life.

Work Visa / Skilled Worker Visa

B1–B2 required for most sectors. Regulated professions (healthcare, engineering) may require B2+ with specific professional language certification. IT sector may accept B1 or even English-only in some cases.

Ausbildung (Training) Visa

B1 minimum for most training positions. B2 strongly preferred and gives significant advantages in both the application process and daily training activities.
