Germany's Ausbildung system is one of the most successful vocational training models in the world. Here's everything international students need to know about participating in this unique program.
What is Ausbildung?
Ausbildung is a dual vocational training program that combines practical on-the-job training with classroom education. Trainees typically spend 3–4 days per week at a company and 1–2 days at a vocational school (Berufsschule).
Programs last 2–3.5 years depending on the profession, and graduates receive a nationally recognized qualification (Berufsabschluss).
Earning While Learning
One of the biggest advantages is that Ausbildung trainees receive a monthly salary (Ausbildungsvergütung). This typically ranges from €800 to €1,200 per month in the first year, increasing with each subsequent year.
Trainees also receive full social benefits including health insurance, pension contributions, and paid vacation.
Popular Ausbildung Professions
Some of the most popular fields for international students include hospitality management (Hotelkaufmann/frau), healthcare assistance (Pflegefachmann/frau), mechatronics (Mechatroniker/in), IT specialist (Fachinformatiker/in), and industrial clerk (Industriekaufmann/frau).
How to Apply from Kenya
Step 1: Achieve at least B1 German proficiency (B2 preferred). Step 2: Research companies offering Ausbildung positions on platforms like the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit).
